About Dan
The life and times of a man with no life
Dan Charney is your basic, all around computer geek. From the excessively air-conditioned darkness of his college apartment, he watches crime shows on TV while eating popcorn, pausing only to occasionally confirm that he does not, in fact, have mail. So far, much of Dan’s life has been spent in school, learning, among other things, exactly how long one can keep a professor off topic by feigning interest in whatever they happen to be rambling about at the moment (personal best: 40 minutes). Right now, Dan is spending his time time in graduate school, being given a thorough reminder of just how boring higher education can be. In his spare time, Dan enjoys music and food.
Partial Resume
Dan would be overjoyed to learn that some company that does something cool has become desperate enough to hire him. He would have to decline because he’s in graduate school, but if you need a freelance developer for a quick web design or software project, Dan may very well be your man. In addition to talking about himself in the third person and overusing commas, Dan’s skills include:
Skills
- Debugging just about anything in just about any language.
- Ruby on Rails (and Ruby for other things. Ruby is just cool.).
- Objective-C/Cocoa.
- PHP/XHTML/CSS.
- OpenGL.
- Subversion (this is more of an obsession than a skill).
- Databases, with experience using MySQL, Postgresql, SQLite, and Oracle.
- More programming languages including Java, C, C++, Python, bash/zsh, C#, VB.net, Javascript, Bison/Flex, AppleScript, TeX.
- All those office productivity applications HR people like to gas on about.
- Encyclopedic knowledge of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, inasmuch as encyclopedias tend to be incomplete and frequently inaccurate.
- A casual familiarity with MFC, CVS, Windows driver programming, Mac kext programming, Perl, Blender, TorqueScript, Spanish, and German.
Professional Experience
- 2 years of IT Support, helping to keep fifteen thousand Windows and Mac users happy with Miami University.
- 1 year of Desktop Support, building customized drivers and software for an enormous Windows lab.
- 5 years or so of professional lawn care for an office building in Ohio. Wholly irrelevant.
Unprofessional Experience
- 1 year or so as a Gobolinux developer, ending right around the time I got my Mac.
Education
- BS in Computer Science from Miami University in December of 2006.
- Currently in the process of acquiring an MSCS, having decided it’s easier than trying to get a job.

None. Actually, there are quite a few of these, but Dan is too privacy-conscious to include them in a world-readable web page without their consent. If you’d like a complete resume, you’re welcome to contact Dan.
